Welcome, the pop-up Huawei P Smart Z 2019

Want a phone with a little pop-up camera on the top? Oh go on, admit it, you do. You do really.

Huawei continue to pretty much smash everything in their path with the launch of this, the P Smart Z 2019. Available in black or this funky emerald green, it’s got a 6.59″ TFT LCD screen with a 2340 x 1080 resolution at 391PPI. It seems to be aimed at the mid-range, with the pop-up 16 megapixel camera and 64GB of storage (plus 4GB RAM) sending out a “funky and youth” vibe. This camera is normally hidden in the chassis of the phone but, when you want to snap a selfie, it rises up and hovers over the screen. camera is hidden within the phone body. When the front camera is activated, for instance when taking selfies, it automatically emerges and hovers over the screen. We’ve seen similar from Oppo and Noa, but we’re likely to see this P Smart Z 2019 appearing in more pockets – especially when you can bag the thing for £279 in Amazon and Argos next month.

So no notch, no in-screen camera. Just screen. That camera also pops up in just a second by the way.

Powered by Android 9, it has WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB-C charging and a very decent 4000 mAh battery. It’s also got a Kirin 710F CPU. We think this should be the same as the Kirin 710, so an octa-core 64-bit CPU with four “big” cores operating at up to 2.2GHz and four smaller cores hitting 1.7 GHz.

The handset also has a fingerprint sensor and a rear dual-camera setup consisting of a 16 megapixel and 2 megapixel sensor. Thankfully, despite the bargain-basement price (this is cheaper than the similarly-spec’d Google Pixel 3a from yesterday), it does indeed have NFC, so you can do the mobile “tappy-tappy” payments.

Head to their website for more information. We’ll bring you more details on this one when it’s available to buy in the shops in a few weeks time.
