HTC announce the Desire 820

Remember our review of the HTC Desire 816? It was a lightweight phablet with a 5.5″ 720p screen, 1.6 GHz quad-core CPU and 8GB of on-board storage. We quite liked it.

Here, then, is the pretty similar Desire 820. It looks the same on the outside and has the very same screen, but the storage, CPU and camera specs have been ramped up significantly.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615, 1.5 GHz Octa-Core & CPU 1.0 GHz Octa-Core CPU, with 16GB of on-board storage and 2GB RAM plus a microSD card for more storage. It’s got Cat 4 4G, that CPU is 64-bit and around back you’ll find a 13 megapixel f/2.2 aperture camera. Up front, for your selfies, an 8 megapixel shooter. Other specs include Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA, WiFi, a 2600mAh battery, NFC and those dual speakers up front – aka BoomSound.

That trick multi-core CPU tech means that there’s separate CPU’s for light and intensive requirements. It should mean that your battery power lasts that little bit longer.

As you can see from some of these shots, it has a two-tone colour unibody with colour trims around the camera, flash and the buttons.

No details on pricing, but the slighty-lower-spec-Desire 816 is pretty cheap, and Peter Chou from HTC tells us…

With the HTC Desire 820, we’ve combined the most advanced technology with the best possible entertainment experience and bold, distinctive design, to deliver a handset that is both desirable and affordable.

…so hopefully this will be pretty cheap too. Availability will be announced “locally”.
