New extending screen shown off on the Oppo X 2021

One phone, two different screen options

A regular-looking slab is how we almost expect every single smartphone to look now, but Oppo are trying something altogether new. As part of the “Oppo Inno Day” they unveiled three concept products – the “Oppo AR Glass 2021”, the “Oppo CybeReal AR” and a rollable concept handset called the “Oppo X 2021”.

The phone has grabbed a whole lot of attention due to its ability to alter screen size on the fly, from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches via a rollable OLED display.

It’s part of work being undertaken by the Oppo R&D team, as they experiment with flexible display and structural stacking. It includes an innovative “Roll Motor” powertrain, a 2-in-1 plate, and a self-developed “Warp Track” to laminate the screen.

During a keynote speech, Levin Liu, Oppo Vice President and Head of OPPO Research Institute, told us..

It’s important to build technical capabilities, but it’s even more important to innovatively integrate them. Oppo believes we should bring the benefits to users, and leave all the complexity to us.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on whether this product actually comes to fruition, but it’s certainly a very interesting idea. What’s your thoughts on it?

Oh, and let’s not mentioned the TCL Rollable concept phone that popped up on the interwebs back in March…. Shhhh….
