Motorola edge and edge+ in the house

Remember these guys? They’ve been kicking around for a while now. Motorola are back, and they’ve launched their “fastest, loudest and boldest” flagship phones ever – the Motorola edge and edge+, all in lower-case letters too.

Moto have gone with the “5G first” mantra (similar to OnePlus with their new phones). However, here both of the phones have the same 6.7″ 1080 x 2340 pixel screen (19.5:9 ratio and 385 ppi density) with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and a 90Hz refresh rate. HDR10+ features on those curved screens too.

Both run Android 10, both have NFC, dual-band WiFi, GPS, Type-C charging, stereo speakers and a 3.5mm jack.

However, where the edge+ really takes off is with the camera arrangement, the CPU and the memory. On the edge+ you’re getting the Snapdragon 865 CPU (octa-core up to 2.84GHz), 12GB RAM and 256GB storage (no microSD by the way). In addition, the camera setup is just bonkers crazy. A rear camera setup comes with a 108 megapixel sensor (f/1.8) plus an 8 megapixel telephoto lens with a 3x optical zoom and a 16 megapixel ultrawide lens plus a depth lens. Up front, a 25 megapixel lens. That and a ma-hoo-sive 5000 mAh battery with 18W “TurboPower” wired charging and 15W wireless charging.

On the edge you get a slightly smaller 4500 mAh battery with 18W TurboPower wired charging only. Here the main shooter is a 64 megapixel main shooter, a 16 megapixel ultra-wide macro lens and an 8 megapixel telephoto lens. It also swaps out the CPU for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 with either 4GB or 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, although this one apparently gets a microSD card slot.

It looks like the edge+ is only going to be available Italy, Nordics and Serbia for €1,199, which will probably work out to £1,099 if it ever comes to the UK. In the USA it’s a Verizon exclusive. The edge will be available here in the UK on O2, Amazon and Argos for £549.

Motorola tell us that the UI is as “near to Android stock” as possible with no clunky additional apps or duplicate apps, plus there’s a new “My UX” system which lets you customize your experience to be a little more personal. This will let you create your own themes based on unique fonts, colours, icons and sensor animations.
