Xiaomi go utterly bananas. Meet the Mi MIX Alpha!

It’s a concept phone, surely? You won’t be able to buy it.. will you?

Oh wait. No, Xiaomi tell me that they’re going to start small-scale production of this one at the end of September!

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is pretty much all screen. A 180% screen-to-body ratio? Has someone from Xiaomi been drinking too much?

The phone is an “imagination of the future of 5G phones” and comes with a 108 megapixel camera. It’s made from titanium allot, ceramics and saphire. No only that, but (wait for it), there’s “cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology”. Err.. OK then.

The phone, when fired up, has a screen on the front, side, and back. Like the folding phones we’ve seen, but in more of a “wrap around” design. It’s laminated and protected so that the screen shouldn’t – it’s promised – be damaged. Speaking from my experience, the lack of a case would be a bit of a risk.. especially given how many phones I’ve damaged!

That 108 megapixel camera sports has a much larger sensor than standard smartphone cameras. It can create images with a bonkers 12032 x 9024 pixel resolution and excellent low-light shots. There’s also OIS to stabilize videos and a 20 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera for macro shots and a 12 megapixel telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom.

Powered by a Snapdragon 855+ CPU, it does WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and has the Chinese 5G bands. It’s got 12GB RAM and 512GB storage with a 4050mAh battery plus 40W wired fast charge.

The cost? Well, Xiaomi will retail this at RMB 19,999, which works out at around £2,259. Blimey.
