TicWatch Pro – Unboxing

I have been testing the TicWatch S2 for the past few days whilst I have been away on holiday and I have been mightily impressed with it in general. There has however been one thing that has been slightly annoying me and that was the battery life of the thing. I have been fairly active over my week away and during that time the watch was being used to track all my activities which it did worry free. There was a side effect of this effective tracking however and that was the battery life. Now in my research for doing the review I was also able to see that TicWatch have a pro version in their line up which I was keen to try. Well, I have it here in Coolsmartphone Towers and I am keen to have a look at it.

Here we go….

The TicWatch Pro shares a lot of similarities with the TicWatch S2 that I have looked at previously. They both run the same Qualcomm Wear 2100 chipset, both have the same screen size and resolution. They both use Wifi and Bluetooth for connectivity. Both the watches will work with the very latest Google Wear software. Both have all the sensors that you would expect of a modern Wear OS devices such as Accelerometer, Gyroscope, GPS and Heart Rate Monitor. There are however quite a few major differences present though.

The Pro has got Google Pay via NFC support, it also has an external speaker. You will find 2 buttons on the crown and the device is made of slightly more premium materials to give more of a quality feel. The watch has form as a higher priority that Function which gives it a more esteemed look and feels over its more ruggedized cousin.

The whole watch is also slightly thinner which makes it less bulky and obtrusive when on your wrist which I like.

The biggest difference, however, is the coolest. The Pro is capable of up to 30-day battery life when used in “Essential mode”. What is “Essential mode’ I hear you ask, well let’s try and explain.

When in normal usage the watch will function just like any other Wear OS device and this will give you similar battery life to that of the S2. You can, however, use a second display panel that sits on top of the AMOLED one that Wear OS uses to display a different watch interface. this interface is “Essential Mode’ and this is what will allow you to stretch out to up to 30 days.

The screen is a Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic (FSTN) LCD display. It has high sunlight visibility without having to use a high backlight level and it will display all your important information when you are using it. It is really designed for when you using it for working out and you may not be connected to your phone. Another really cool touch is that if you don’t need the 30 days life then you can utilise a sort of Hybrid mode that will switch between the two displays when required, which is neat.

Here the full specs for you check out for now.

TicWatch Pro’s Layered Display technology (patent pending) is an innovative breakthrough, enabling the user to switch between an FSTN (Film compensated Super Twisted Nematic) LCD display and an OLED display that sit on top of one another. The FSTN display (top layer) is a transparent LCD display chosen due to its low power consumption, high visibility in direct sunlight, and transparent quality when not turned on. This is important in order to ensure the OLED (bottom layer) display’s brightness and colors aren’t compromised when in use.

“TicWatch Pro is the result of our relentless pursuit to make a premium smartwatch that greatly resolves the battery life issues which have been inherent in smartwatches”, explained Zhifei Li, CEO and Co-Founder of Mobvoi. “Our approach has been to innovate with the screen, radically reducing battery consumption. Ultimately, TicWatch Pro is our flagship smartwatch designed to further our mission of bringing anyone and everyone access to affordable, high quality smart devices.”

The power to switch between displays and their related “modes” allows TicWatch Pro users to achieve unprecedented battery life and control over battery usage in an award-winning smartwatch.

  • In “Smart Mode”, the OLED display is active along with Wear OS by Google, and battery life is up to two full days of usage
  • In “Essential Mode”, only the FSTN display is in use and battery life can last up to 30 days
  • When Smart Mode reaches low battery, Essential Mode can automatically be turned on so the watch can last for another three days
  • To switch to Essential Mode, users can turn it on in a dedicated app or long press the watch’s Function (lower) button
  • To switch to Smart Mode, users can long press on the watch’s Power (upper) button

In Essential Mode, users will see time, date, step counting, and heart rate monitoring. The health and fitness data syncs when TicWatch Pro is switched to Smart Mode. OTA updates over time will add more functions into Essential Mode (since the sensors can still be accessed in this mode) including distance traveled, calories burned, speed and cadence. In Smart Mode, users will have the complete Wear OS by Google experience through the OLED display.

Along with its innovative display and unrivaled battery life, TicWatch Pro features include:

  • Google PlayStore – Access to thousands of apps through the on-watch Play Store, and the ability to download them directly on the watch
  • Google Assistant™ – Access the Assistant directly on your wrist to check the weather, start your run, set a reminder and more just by asking
