MWC – HTC unveil their 5G hub

There was a time when HTC were doing big phone launches here in Barcelona. No longer. Instead this morning they’ve unveiled a new HTC 5G Hub. There wasn’t a big event or a launch here this morning. Instead it’s just a few pictures and a press release.

No matter, because this is a sign of things to come. This HTC 5G Hub, as you’d expect by the name, lets you use 5G on multiple devices. It’ll pump out WiFi for you to connect to, and in turn the box will connect to whichever 5G network you’ve got the contract with.

It’s a 5G hotspot which will let you have speedy gaming and 4K video for up to 20 users. The likes of Sprint, EE (UK), Three UK, Deutsche Telekom (Germany) and Sunrise in Switzerland have signed up already.

It’s easy to use and control thanks to a 5″ HD touchscreen and it’s powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 plus a Qualcomm 60GHz WiFi chipset for brisk WiFi connectivity.

Cher Wang, Chairwoman and CEO of HTC, told us..

HTC is proud to bring to market the world’s first 5G mobile smart hub. 5G will be the game-changer for VR and AR, and the new HTC 5G Hub will seamlessly deliver the great bandwidth of 5G to our devices, driving our vision of Vive Reality—a boundless, immersive environment where human experiences will come to the forefront.

If you want to get connected on the move, it’s also powered by a 7,660 mAh battery and there’s a gigabit ethernet port if you don’t have or want to use WiFi.

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division, stated..

Our 5G network will give EE customers even faster, more reliable connections where they need it most. Whether online gaming on the move, downloading or streaming 4K content, or simply keeping a fast connection in the busiest areas, EE customers with HTC’s new 5G Mobile Smart Hub will be able to connect any of their Wi-Fi enabled devices to our 5G network for the best connected experience.
