Costing just £219 on Pay As You Go or for £25 a month on a Vodafone Red Extra Plan (1GB data, no upfront cost), this is a cheap and yet really very smart handset.
The new 2019 version has a dewdrop notch 6.21″ 2340 x 1080 pixel (19.5:9) display and a more powerful octa-core chipset Kirin 710. That’s four 2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 and four 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 plus 3GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage and a microSD slot for up to another 512GB.
You’ve got all the usual gear on this. NFC for your contactless payments, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, a 3400mAh battery, fingerprint reader and yes – yes – the 3.5mm “courage port” is still there. Rejoice people, rejoice.
On the back there’s a dual camera setup – one is a 13 megaxpixel and the other is a 2 megapixel depth sensor. The main lens is a f/1.8 wide-aperture lens. The second cam creates authentic bokeh effects. Working together, and adding the Huawei AI magic, you get scene recognition and image stabilisation works for excellent nighttime photos.
Up front is an 8 megapixel selfie shooter in that dewdrop notch. The selfie camera supports new AI and AR capabilities, plus gesture control.
It’s powered by Android 9.0 and, although you’ll hear people calling this a “midmarket device”, it’s a sign of how things are changing. People can pick up an excellent smartphone for less money and really not forfeit a great deal when compared to the £800+ smartphones at the top-end.
Anyways, get this at Vodafone. We’ve also spotted it on a Red Entertainment plan for £38 per month with 8GB of data and unlimited everything else. No upfront on that and a choice of Prime Video, Sky Sports Mobile TV, Spotify Premium or a NOW TV Entertainment Pass.
Here’s some shots that Garry has managed to snap of the device in the flesh..
