Samsung reveals the Galaxy A9… with 4 cameras on the back

On the front of this fairly normal-looking handset is a 24 megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera. That, let me tell you, is where normality ends camera-wise. On the back, there’s not one, not two or three, but four cameras. The first lens is ultra-wide, a bit like a dash-cam, and will get a wide field of vision. It’s 8 megapixels. The second is a telephoto lens which will do a 2X optical zoom without any pixelation. That’s 10 megapixels. Then, in lens number three, almost the same camera as you have up front – a 24 megaxpixel (albeit an f1.7 here). Then, for depth, a 5 megapixel at the bottom. Oh, and there’s a flash too.

The “A range” hasn’t always been that attractive to the majority of Samsung smartphone customers, who prefer instead to go for the pricier Galaxy S8 or S9, however this new A9 could change that.

It’s powered by an octa-core (4 x 2.2GHz and 4 x 1.8GHz) CPU, with either 6 or 8GB RAM (depending on the model) and 128GB on board. Yes, 128GB on board. There’s also a microSD card slot. Very decent this. The screen is a 6.3″ Full HD (1080×2220) Super AMOLED, there’s Android 8.0 (Oreo) out of the box and it’s got a 3800 mAh battery. Other specs include a fingerprint sensor, dual-band WiFi, Cat.9 LTE, NFC, GPS and USB Type-C charging.

The Galaxy A9 debuts the world’s first rear quad camera, and DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics, tells us..

As a global leader in smartphone innovation, we understand the demand for meaningful innovation in a fast-paced world driven by visual communication. Building on our legacy in smartphone camera development we’re introducing next-generation technology across our entire Galaxy portfolio to give more consumers the opportunity to experience cutting-edge innovation.

The phone also has AI Scene Recognition and a “Scene Optimizer” to make shots as perfect as possible. That “Depth Lens” means that you can manually manage depth of field and focus settings easily too. There’s the “Marmite” Bixby, Samsung Pay and Samsung Health apps too.

It’ll be available in Caviar Black, Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink. It has a 3D Glass curved back and will be available in “selected markets” from November. You’l be able to buy it here in the UK Samsung.com/uk website and “selected partners” for £549 in November too. Head here for more information.
