Vodafone beams footballer across England using 5G

The CTO at Vodafone UK, Scott Petty, wanted to show us what 5G can really do last week. The new tech will definitely make everything faster, but how will it benefit our lives otherwise?

Well, with the aid of England and Manchester City Women’s Football Captain Steph Houghton, they put a live 3D hologram on stage at their HQ in Newbury. Via the 5G link she gave 11-year old Lionesses Iris some footballing tips, all the way from Manchester.

Vodafone made the UK’s first live holographic 5G call between Manchester and Newbury. Vodafone also confirmed that they will switch on 5G trials in Manchester and Birmingham first after successful trials at the Newbury-based lab.

If you’re interested in taking a tour, read our earlier feature from 2015, where we guide you through the Vodafone headquarters and take a look at some of the technology.
