Mobike stops operating in Manchester due to crime

Remember how this bike-rental was experiencing a crime-wave in Manchester? Well, it’s now hitting their margins enough for them to totally quit to city. Anti-social behaviour, dumped, smashed and lost bikes have now meant that the cycle-sharing firm has pulled out of Manchester.

Some 10% of bikes were being lost, stolen or damaged each month, and now Manchester has become the only city in the 200 that Mobike operates in to lose the service.

The company had previously insisted that bikes, which proved popular across the city due to their ease of rental and the ability to park anywhere, were theft and vandal-proof. However, some gangs and individuals took this as a challenge, throwing rocks, smashing, burning and stealing bikes.

At the moment, the company is still operating in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Oxford and Cambridge.
