Asus announce the Intel Atom equipped Zenfone range

Asus have announced a new range of Intel Atom based phones, there are three devices available in a range of colours and sizes. They come in four, five or six variations and Asus have applied a skin to them all called ZenUI.

Zenfone 6

The ZenFone 6 is the largest of the range at six inches and packs the biggest spec too.

– 6 inch HD 1280 x 720-pixel IPS display
– 2GHz Intel Atom Z2580 CPU with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading Technology
– Android 4.3 (will update to Android 4.4 KitKat)
– GSM/GPRS/EDGE; WCDMA/HSPA+
DC-HSPA+ (DL/UL): 42/5.76 Mbps
– Integrated 802.11b/g/n; Wi-Fi Direct
– 13-megapixel rear camera
– 2-megapixel front camera
– 1GB RAM
– 3230mAh battery
– Up to 64GB micro SD card
– Dimensions – 166.9 x 84.3 x 9.9-5.5mm
– Weight – 200g

So with only 1GB of RAM and 6″ 720p display I can’t see this being an expensive device. Although the MicroSD Slot and the large battery would make a nice multi media device.

Zenfone 5

The ZenFone 5 is basically just a smaller version of the ZenFone 6, for those that don’t want a huge phone.

– 5 inch HD 1280 x 720-pixel IPS display
– 2GHz Intel Atom Z2580 CPU with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading Technology
– Android 4.3 (will update to Android 4.4 KitKat)
– GSM/GPRS/EDGE; WCDMA/HSPA+
DC-HSPA+ (DL/UL): 42/5.76 Mbps
– Integrated 802.11b/g/n; Wi-Fi Direct
– 8-megapixel rear camera
– 2-megapixel front camera
– 1GB RAM
– 2050mAh battery
– Up to 64GB micro SD card
– Dimensions – 148.2 x 72.8 x 10.3-5.5mm
– Weight – 140g

The ZenFone 5 is the most interesting out of the pack, with the same spec as its larger sibbling apart from a smaller battery. The 5″ 720p screen won’t look as bad as the larger ZenFone either.

Zenfone 4

The ZenFone 4 is the smallest of the range and also it has the lowest spec.

– 4 inch WVGA 800 x 480-pixel display
– 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 CPU with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading Technology
– Android 4.3 (will update to Android 4.4 KitKat)
– GSM/GPRS/EDGE; WCDMA/HSPA+
DC-HSPA+ (DL/UL): 42/5.76 Mbps
– Integrated 802.11b/g/n; Wi-Fi Direct
– 5-megapixel rear camera
– 0.3-megapixel front camera
– 1GB RAM
– 1170mAh battery
– Up to 64GB micro SD card
– Dimensions – 124.4 x 61.4 x 11.2-6.3mm
– Weight – 115g

It’s a shame they had to trim the specs of the smaller ZenFone, many people out there want a small high spec device and this with its WVGA screen and tiny battery won’t appeal to many.

Overall it’s nice to see another manufacturer releasing phones, but until we see prices it’s all a little bit inconsequential. Basic specs and nice design don’t really appeal that much at the moment. However if the larger ones come out under £200 then I’d be a whole lot more interested.
