Google Maps 5.1, now with Check ins for Latitude

Google have just updated Google Maps for Android to version 5.1.

The major updates all centre around Latitude, it’s location based service. Taking a leaf out of foursquare’s book, you can now check in to various locations to let your friends know exactly where you are.

Google have also added a few innovations of their own with the ability to receive notifications to check in or even automatically check in and out.

As it all uses Google Maps you can browse reviews of the places you check into, add your own ratings and browse those of others’. Frequent check ins will also help you earn the status of regular or VIP, Google’s equivalent to foursquare badges.

Those concerned with privacy implications will be happy to know that all these features are opt in and there are various privacy settings which can be altered to share your status with however few or many people you wish.

The update is available now from the market.
