Sony Ericsson drops Symbian for Android

SonyEricsson is dropping Symbian from its future plans and intends to focus on Android, with a bit of Windows Mobile, in future.

CEO Bert Nordberg said, “I want us to have the biggest share of Android phone sales in the world. If you look globally, the competition is really between Android and the iPhone. We currently have three operating systems that we use and I would like that to go down to two, with most of our activity going on Android.”

Yet more good news for the seemingly unstoppable Android, but quite a blow for Symbian. It will be interesting to see what effect this has in terms of platforms developers choose to support.
