European networks to slash data roaming charges

European networks to slash data roaming charges We’ve all seen the endless scare stories of huge phone bills following trips abroad. Whilst roaming call charges were reduced a while back following an intervention by EU parliament, texting and data access is still shockingly expensive.

Now EU Telecoms chiefs have agreed to reduce these costs, with price reductions coming into force by July 2009. The new limits will mean that texts shouldn’t cost more than 9p whilst roaming and there’ll be a 83p limit on the cost of downloading 1 MB of data. Many networks have long used roaming charges as a cash-cow, with real costs being a tiny fraction of the actual price paid.
