Have you received an email from me recently that says…
“I would like to inform you about important information regarding your email address”
With a Zip attachment ? DO NOT open it – this is a virus, and can come from ANY email address. It wasn’t sent out by me! Click the link below for more info on it… You may have noticed and email which looks like it has come from email@example.com and reads…
I would like to inform you about important information regarding your email address. This email address will be expiring.
Please read attachment for details.
Best regards, Administrator
Please IGNORE this and DO NOT open the attachment. This is a virus called W32.Mimail and information can be found here about it. This new type of virus is able to hide its’ payload in a Zip file – which most people “trust”.
Although this email LOOKS to have come from me, if you look at the headers (to do this in Outlook 2000, open the email by double-clicking, then click “View” and then “Options”. IN Outlook Express, open the message by double clicking and then click “File->Properties” then hit the “Details” tab)…. you should see something like this…
Here you can see the IP address that the email originated from. This is NOT my IP address, and you can actually check this back using tools such as those at www.samspade.org/t/
Be aware of this virus, and always ensure you have an up-to-date scanning system. I only became aware of this virus when I started seeing messages coming from myself, which I have not sent. It is unfortunately EXTREMELY easy to forge the “sending” address, so you may also receive these emails from other addresses too.
