I'll be honest with you lot and say that this isn't perhaps the best audio quality in the world, however if you ignore the first few seconds (where I badly distort the microphone shouting, "Welcome to the Coolsmartphone podcast"), then it's defintely worth a listen.

This Podcast was actually well over an hour long, but I got onto the Motorway without realising that I hadn't got much fuel left, so I got distracted by the blinking fuel light on the dash board and the whole Podcast sounded rubbish for about the first 20 minutes, so I started all over again when I eventually found a petrol station at some random motorway junction, and then edited it down.

This week we've got the release of the Orange SPV C600, the M3000, news on the Samsung i300, the new HTC Star Trek and HTC Breeze, details of free videos, a free PDF viewer an Orange Update for C500 owners and the start of our campaign to try and get the M3000 on Orange UK!

Oh, also - right at the end I get a bit mad because I drive past some nutters house who have decided to put their Christmas lights up - and turn them on - in October.

Oh dear lord. This has to be one of the weirdest, most dis-jointed Podcasts I've ever done. There's around 3 introductions, a stop in the middle while I get some Petrol, then I go off-track as a car crash happens on the M6.. then I go even more off-track when I get stuck in the jam... then I talk a little about the new C600, M3000, then - if you can get all the way to the end of it without going mad - I mention the Qtek 9100, Orneta Checkers and much more. Oh, then I ramble on about the rain and how bad it is. Hey, this is a long one - just to make up for the big gap! :)

Finally I gave in and decided to respond to the voicemails you've been leaving on my Skype voicemail box! (Click here to find out how to) In this very low-tech way of recording your messages, I simply hold the mic close to the laptop speaker. Sure, it sounds a bit weird, but it gets the job done! :)

This one is recorded at home and is about 14 minutes long.

What is the CoolSmartPhoneCast?! How can I take part?

WHAT IS A PODCAST ?

The CoolSmartPhoneCast is an audio version of this site. I record it whilst driving home in my car onto a Pocket PC, then this is edited later to bring you these MP3's. "Casts" or "PodCasts" are basically radio shows that you download. You don't have to tune in at a specific time, just download and listen when you've got a free moment.

"PodCasting" came about when people started recording stuff, then plonking it onto their iPods. However, the Windows Mobile phone will play MP3s just as good as any other device, so you can copy an MP3 to your phone and listen to it on the move. If you don't know how, just click here and I'll guide you through doing it.

HOW IS IT DONE?

Well, I do the cheapy way. I tried it with an MP3 player to record this PodCast onto but the in-built microphone was rubbish when used in the car (which is where I record the PodCasts as this is the only time I get free). I now use a Pocket PC (Orange SPV M2000), an application called NoteM for recording directly into MP3 on the SD card (NoteM is available here for FREE!), a 2Gig SD card from MobyMemory.com (a card this size isn't required though, a 32Mb one would do!), then I use a hands-free headset thing (wired) which clips on my ear and has a boom-mic that goes near to my mouth. A picture of this can be found at the bottom of this article. Add to that the Lexus which cuts a lot of noise out and you're laughing. :) The boom mic is good because it was designed for use with phones / Pocket PCs in the car and therefore cuts a lot of noise out. I then chop the whole recording together with the excellent free Audacity on the laptop.

I've written about it here, and it's definitely worth a try. Once you've got Skype, give me a call now and leave a message. Call "coolsmartphone" on your Skype now and give me something to work with :) The call you make will go directly to an voice-mail system, and it's that recording which is used.
