So, you've just got your phone. Probably the first thing you'll want to do is add in your contacts - all your mates, relatives, work-mates etc etc. Now, you can do this one of two ways. Either type them in by hand on the phone, or you can use Outlook, then synchronise the Outlook contacts onto your phone. Here we'll run through how to use Outlook to quickly type in your buddies details...

Open Outlook. If you don't have it installed, it will probably be on the CD that came with your phone. Once open, there should be a button like this, called "Address Book" or "Contacts". Click it.
|
Here's my contacts. Don't worry - your eyes aren't playing up - I've just blobbed out the email addresses of my mates! Now, here it's showing all the contacts I already have. You may not have anything in here at all, but that's OK.
Let's add a contact in. To do this, you need to click the "New Entry" button on the top left. It looks like this...

|
Once you've clicked "New Entry" you'll be prompted to choose between "New Contact" or "New Distribution List". We just want a "New Contact", so click on that, then click "OK" |
Here's the main contact page. You don't HAVE to fill in all the boxes, but if you have the information - put it in.
Try and get OUT of the habit of using different names for different numbers. For example, you NO LONGER NEED to put "Dad (Mobe)", "Dad (Work)" - now all the details are stored under ONE NAME instead of several different names.
I'm adding someone called "Alan Jones" here. I have his mobile number, plus his work and home number. As I've just said - on older phones - I would have put these under different names, like "Alan (M)" or "Alan (H)", but as you can see there's no need for that - it's all under one name, all in one place. I've even put his email address in and a funny Job Title :)
Notice here that there's a "File As:" option. This chooses how you will see his name displayed on the phone. As default Outlook sets this to "Surname, Forename", so Alan Jones would show on your phone as "Jones, Alan". Personally, I think this is bloody stupid as hell, so I've switched it here. I'll mention more on this in a minute.

Once you're happy with the details (remember with mobile numbers, if you put the mobile number in with the international dial code, it makes it easier to call people when you're abroad), click "Save and Close".
If your Smartphone is connected to the cradle you should notice that your contact is added immediately! If your phone isn't connected, plonk it on the cradle now and it will automatically add your new entry to the phone.

Right, over to the phone. I've hit "Contacts" on my phone. Now I can see Alan Jones! Coo! Good eh ? You can see his name and the letter "W" - this stands for "Work". Again, I've rubbed out my other contacts here with a bit of mist so you can see it better,
If I hit the "action" button (usually if you hit the joystick in), then I get to see more details..

Here's all the details we put into Outlook. At the minute Alan's default number is (W) for Work. I don't want that, so I'm going to alter this to his mobile number. Firstly, I need to move down to his mobile number (M), then select "Menu".....
|
| There's loads of options here. Notice that I can add a speed dial to his mobile number if I want. However, I want to choose "Set as default". This will make his mobile number the preferred number. |

|
There you go. All done. Now his Mobile number has a dot next to it, meaning that this is the default number. |

Congratulations! You've now added a contact. Now you simply need to use Outlook to add in all the rest of your contacts!
