iPhone vs Storm vs G1 vs HTC Touch HD!

The Gadget Show on Five has recently posted a face-off between the iPhone, Blackberry Storm, T-Mobile G1 and HTC Touch HD. Hmmm.. you'd think that iPhone would walk it, surely?

Well, no. Jon Bentley puts all the phones through their paces with camera quality, WiFi, push email capabilites all tested. Jon did quickly use the stylus and Today menu (instead of the finger-friendly TouchFLO 3D system), although there's some brilliant email composing and battery life testing - both tests that the HD excelled in.

The video is well worth a look, especially if you're planning to treat yourself this Christmas.

Talk about being biased! The Touch HD was robbed!

I also had a play with the blackberry today, and it really is awful. The whole screen clicks like a button! Terrible

Also, he berates the G1 for not having video: and doesn't make as big a deal on the iPhone. The video is not a hardware problem, it's SOFTWARE! And OH LOOK! that can be fixed on Android, but NOT on the iPhone, because Apple said so! Most of the problems he found were in fact software, and EASILY fixed. And they will be, mark my words!

Windows Mobile is the most versatile and most POWERFUL mobile operating system around: It's a PLUS point in many people's eyes, not a negative!

Also the battery life test wasn't fair: They were shown doing different thing, and the two phones were probably on different brightness levels too... it needs to be done EQUALLY, with the two phones doing the exact same tasks.

I just had to reply to this as those gadget show people are just so biased. I remember the last comparison between the iphone and diamond they were so biased and never gave the diamond a chance. When the touch HD came out i thought to myself if those idiots were to compare it surely it would beat almost anything and shite on the iphone 3g. Their show is obviously unfair.

The whole thing was rubbish to be honest, they compared the phones against a few feature sets so it was never a good comparison. Having said that I would just about agree with the outcome which was a draw right?, having used the first and second placed phones extensively. The Touch HD won on the email side of things and that was using a stylus and the crappy win mo on screen keyboard. It also won the battery life athough that was a joke in itself as we didnt see if they were both on HSDPA, if WiFi was enabled, push email etc etc. The fact of the matter is if you want a media centric phone there is nothing better than the iPhone 3G, if you want a phone that is a powerful business phone then the Touch HD is the way to go. At the end of the day who cares its what works for you that matters.

ALSO, the testing method itself was SO biased.

Comparing cars, you wouldn't instantly disregard a people carrier because it was slower than a 2 seater sports car. Horses for courses: different jobs need different phones, and devices should NOT have been "eliminated"

I'm also amazed taht the G1 was given NO credit for having the only keyboard out of those tested. it was barely mentioned. The keyboard would have almost certainly won it the email test.

Additionally, you cannot fault the Touch HD for Orange's network. It's not their fault. The HD is also NOT an orange exclusive: it can be bought contract free. Same with the G1, as there is the Android developer handset, which is admittedly incredibly expensive.

The idiots also gave my beloved touch pro bad bad review because they couldn't handle the interface.

Methinks these people have an issue with Microsoft - someone should tell them hating them is so old fashioned.

Lowest common denominator journalism though. Very few people will buy it sim free compared to contracts, and then it is an exclusive, and Orange are retards for still not sorting out a decent data tarriff.

These comparisons are flawed in general for that specific reason. Like you said, the iPhone is a great multimedia handset, but less good for photography, or productivity.

If you NEEDED a decent camera with a flash, you'd have to get something like the N82 or C905, regardless.

The reviewer is an absolute *LOL sorry was drunk last night*. 99% of the people watching the video will have a more balanced and valid opinion than him but the icing on the cake is that he's paid to spout this crap!

the moral of the video is... iphones are the best in the world, no matter how they perform in tests.

Viewer's favourite? Who watches that show? I sat through that whole video, and now I have a headache. The presenter is clearly mental.

Don't know what everyone is talking about? Jon Bentley is both an excellent reviewer and top notch journalist! The review was very fair, well though out and well executed ....

... BUT SERIOUSLY (are you raging yet?) ... what a CROCK!!!

Why don't the Gadget show just marry their iPhones and get on with it? I accept that to fit in a review within a 5 minute slot on a TV program they were never going to do a full analysis, but the conclusions were flawed.

If they gave both th iPhone and Touch HD 4 G's then what should have happened is they compare the two for features and usability. I will admit the iPhone is a lovely piece of design and brilliant to use, but no MMS, 2MP camera and no Video these a three absolutely unbelievable omissions that I still can't quite believe?!

Whilst people continue to praise the iPhone and brush aside these quite offensive flaws then the Apple bods will keep on patting themselves on the back for doing a good job and not bother to design the features we actually want into such an iconic product.

Anyone seen the figures fro the iPhone in Japan? 500,000 down ... mmmm ... looks like our Japanese cousins have seen the iPhone for what it is (or should I say what it is lacking).

I wonder what HTC would have done if they made the iPhone?

P.S. I do have to admit liking the gadget show but that's probably because its one of the few dedicated gadget related shows on TV.

Leigh - how about moving coolsmartphone into the broadcasting arena?
