A week with the HTC Touch Diamond - Day 1 Well, here it is - the HTC Touch Diamond. We've managed to get it for a whole week so I've decided to do a "day by day" diary of my thoughts. This is going to be my main phone for the next 7 days, so I've swapped my SIM card into the phone and I'll be doing a video diary along with the review very soon.
I'd love to get your questions about this handset now that it's here, so add your comment below. This is the exact same handset we saw at the press event a few weeks ago - it's got the 128Mb of on-board memory (it'll get 192Mb when it arrives in the shops) and it's using a test build of the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, so we're not going to give our final opinion on the OS until the actual full retail version arrives.
Today we've got two treats for you. First, there's day one of my video diary. The video features an "unboxing" and a look at the accessories, including the power-pack too, which is pretty slick. I've added a bit of "behind the scenes" footage from Coolsmartphone HQ too The second treat is a full photo special. This time we're away from the press people and there's a great opportunity to get some fantastic up-close pictures along with comparison photos against other devices.
(Video currently processing! Should be online at 17.00 BST)

nice one gears, was hoping you would be reviewing it soon.
I wonder when it will be possible to pre-order with T-mobile ? I'm out of contract now on the MDA Ciii and am deffo making this my next handset.
keep up the good work m8.
Not sure, though hopefully when it hits their "coming soon" bit I'm sure you'll be able to add your name to one of those "email notification" lists ? _________________ Gears - Webmaster

Outstanding, I have been waiting for a phone like this for years,
It has everything! or does it....is there MicroSD or other expandable memory card slot?
Really looking forward to your review, many thanks for all your hard work....someone has to do it! (fancy swapping jobs?)
Hehehe.. Well, wait for the video. This whole thing is a big lesson in multi-tasking. I'm in the garden at the moment rocking our baby boy to sleep while typing this one-handed..
Oh - and NO external storage - NO microSD or anything. Sorry. _________________ Gears - Webmaster

will the T-mobile version have the same diamond shape and back cover or will they change it to some purpley pink shiny thing.
It has been modified slightly for T-Mobile. The one on display showed a flat back, but that was back in March - also they've swapped the "call / drop" keys with the "back" and "home keys. _________________ Gears - Webmaster

Could you please report back on battery life, using exchange server push email, hsdpa, wifi, calling time etc. That's the only thing that worries me with this device so far!

Yeah, same here. How long does it last with a 3G connection always active? My TYTN is awful when it comes to that, it barely lasts 12 hours :/

Stunning pics - just goes to show that excellent design doesn't have to have a rounded edge!
It is soooooo thin - even next to the Touch (Dual?) - the good news for me is I'm under contract until Sept 09 by which time HTC will hopefully have Android sorted and on a phone.

Hey gears! I was wondering if you had a non-Windows Mobile mobile phone, like a Sony Ericsson candybar (since thats what I'm using now) around that you could compare the size to?

I haven't charged it since taking it outthe box, but it was reporting three bars. It's now on two bars - that's with Wifi and data usage for about an hour plus two calls _________________ Gears - Webmaster

I have some questions that I hope you will go into detail about.
1. There's already been a lot of comments about the sensitivity of the screen on the Touch Diamond in regards to finger touch being a lot better. Just how much better is it...if you were to judge in percentage of accuracy, ie. tap a 10 digit number with your finger at a decent speed, how accurate is it. Or let's talk in compaprison to the current standard to be measured by, the iPhone/Touch capacitive touch screen. How does it compare?
2. Is the screen any more viewable outside under bright sunlight than current HTC devices on the market? Which I might add are pretty much useless even when you try to block the sun out with your hand covering the screen.
3. Htc claims that the battery life on the HTC Touch Diamond is better than their other devices, ok so how much better is it? Let's talk real world usage not just what is dictated on their website. How long does it last in day to day use with 3G and Edge and more importantly let's say with Push Email and bluetooth enabled a few hours calls ect. Don't know if it works with the Touch Diamond but would also be nice to have something like BatteryStatus to measure how much power is being consumed with various features enabled in comparison to other devices.
Please take these things into consideration and even better if they were done in comparison to current HTC devices.
