Steven Buehler has just emailed in about a new set of Power Toys from Microsoft, which have been quietly released. These include a much better Remote Control package as part of their Windows Mobile Developer Power Tools here
Just download the second package - you can grab it directly by clicking here, about 1.8Mb, then Syncronise your Smartphone (over bluetooth or cradle) and then run "ActiveSync Remote Display". It requires NO additional software on the SmartPhone to view and interact with your SmartPhone from the PC! Excellent!!!
UPDATE - Windows Mobile 5.0 users may find that this doesn't work, saying something like "The OS is unrecognised by this application". To fix, just copy the two files in ..
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\ActiveSync_Remote_Display\devices\wce400\armv4t"
..on your PC to the \WINDOWS directory on your Windows Mobile 5.0 device using ActiveSync. DONE! :)
Controls
(Thanks to John Fearnside for the help here)
F1 - Left action button
F2 - Right Action Button
Enter - Middle Action button
Arrow keys - Joystick
F6 - Earpiece up
F7 - Earpiece down
F8 - Star (*) key
F9 - Hash (#) key (AKA "Gate" or "Pound" key)
Esc - Back
Note - don't press press the key to the left of the 1 key (the ¬ key) as it switches off your phone!
Its a great piece of software - but it will slow down your Smartphone and file transfers to / from it for obvious reasons... Also, some keys don't seem to function too well - like SHIFT+letters.
Email me if you find any further keys, or info!! :)
Oh - you can resize the window too if you want!
