Orb is a great piece of software that sits on a PC containing all your video, music, photo files and - if you have them - TV cards. It then streams all of the content to you anywhere in the world - all you need to do is log into a web page, which you can do anywhere and on any device - even on GPRS !
1 - First up, I get onto the PC with all my video and MP3 files. I'm lucky enough to have a Windows Media Center which has digital TV cards and also my recorded TV on it. I just browse to Orb.com and grab the software...
2 - The setup just flies by, getting all my music and video files automatically. It then goes on to ask me about my TV cards etc, however this is a breeze. It'll prompt you for a username and password - this is so you can log into your own area and see your media on the web. All you know about the software, once installed, is the small system tray icon on the bottom right that lets you tweak settings..
3 - Now I'm effectively done with the PC. I can now log in from anywhere else, so first up I'll try from my laptop whilst at work. All I do is browse my.orb.com and enter the username and password I set before. Once done, I get this screen..
You can see my recorded TV show above, it's Wedding Stories because me and Em are doing "research" in the run up to our own wedding day. :) This works fine - I click on it and it starts streaming the show into my Windows Media Player on the laptop with absolutely brilliant quality. It all depends on your connection at home of course and the connection where you are.
4 - Next up, I try the same thing on my Windows Mobile phone. The browser even gets adapted to suit my phone. Top stuff. I just log in and here I am - my media !
5 - I decide to watch my recording of Wedding Stories from the Media Center at home, so I just click on it. Orb then shows me full detail of the programme, which episode and when it was aired.
6 - And I'm done - now I'm happily watching my TV show, streamed all the way from my PC at home. I could be anywhere in the world - anywhere.
Oh, and if you are "out and about" you'll need to make sure that your router "maps through" port 80, which is used for streamin Orb stuff (you can alter this). You'll need to setup what's called "NAT" (Network Address Translation) to pipe port 80 through to the appropriate internal IP address of your system. For example, my ADSL line has a fixed IP address, I just need to say, "Any attempted conections on port 80, go through to 192.168.0.2 internally" - they then get picked up by the PC with all my pics, video and music on. |
