Installing Doom - New Instructions Print E-mail
By Gears
I wrote about Doom previously. For those of you out there that aren't aware of what "Doom" is, it was a game that brought 3D shoot-em-ups to the PC and I have many happy memories of crashing the network at college after running it in MS-DOS. Now Doom is just as fast as it was on your PC, but now it's on your phone! Therefore, I feel the time has come to write about it again because the last article was amazingly popular.

Installing Doom is easy if you know how, however I've broken it down to a simple ten-step-process for those who've never done it before. Doom deserves to be on as many phones as possible! Have a read of the steps below and don't forget to check out SPV3D.com, which has "ports" (versions of the PC game for your phone) of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of Triad, Spear of Destiny and more recently Duke Nukem. It's the place to visit if you want any of this stuff and, best of all, it's all free man.

Here's what I did to get Doom running on my Smartphone (in this example it was an SPV C550, but it should work on all Windows Mobile phones).

1) I downloaded "myDoomCE" from SPV3D.com by clicking the "download" link. You can also get the version that worked for me here.

2) Using "Winrar" (it's like WinZip - available here for free) I un-packed it to my PC's desktop. If you don't have WinRar, get the Zip version here.

3) To run Doom you need a "WAD" file - this is basically the map data for the game. I used this one (Doom1.wad) which is shareware. If you have any problems getting it, click here for a direct link.

4) OK, so as you can see from above I now have "mydoomce.exe" and "doom1.wad" sitting on my Desktop. You'll now need to ActiveSync your Smartphone (click here to learn how to do that) so that you can browse to your phone from the PC.

5) Go to your phones' Storage Card. Ideally you need to copy Doom to a Storage Card, as the "wad" file itself is about 4Mb. I've created a folder on my Storage Card called "Doom" so I can keep things tidy. Drag and drop the two files into here like this..

6) Once it's copied across, go to the "mydoomce.exe" file on your Storage Card and right-click it. Choose "Copy" as shown below...

7) Still on the phone, navigate to "Storage->Windows->Start Menu". On older Smartphone models this will be called "IPSM->Windows->Start Menu". What you're seeing here is the content of your menu when you press "Start" on your phone. Finally, click on the "Games" folder.

8) Right click in the "Games" window and choose "Paste Shortcut". This will create a quick-link to the actual file, but unfortunately it'll call it something like "Shortcut to mydoomce.exe", which sounds a bit rubbish.

9) Right-click on the Shortcut and choose "rename". Give it a better name. I called mine "Doom!"

10) Now unplug the phone from the PC. Browse to your "Games" folder through the Start menu as you normally would. You should now see Doom! Run it, you should see some text fly up the screen - don't worry about that. Following this the game will load and you can play Doom!!

CONTROLS
To start off quickly, use...

- The joystick to control your direction. (Or your direction pad depending on the phone)
- Use "*" to fire, then "#" to open doors etc.
- Use the "soft keys" (left and right soft keys) to "strafe" left and right (side-step).
- Use "back"  to get to the menu whilst playing a game.
- Use number "9" for "Y" (yes) in options or other menus - such as when it says, "Are you sure you want to quit?"

VISIT!
I know I'm always saying, "hey, check out this site". But do, please do check out SPV3D.com for more games like this. You'll probably need to follow pretty similar steps to get it installed.

The Android App Review Show - Episode 12
This week I have been asked to review Twitter Pro. I am very fond of Tweetcaster so any new Twitter client has to be good. For £1.50 can this compete?
