  • Setting your alarm to wake you up - but not getting disturbed by calls Print E-mail
    By Gears
OK, let me tell you a story. Way back in the day I had a Nokia - yes, I know. It's crap. I had a Nokia 6210 and I got into the habit of setting the alarm to wake me up each morning. In fact, ever since the "minimalist" approach to clutter that my darling has taken, we've binned the alarm clocks by the bed.

So now, every morning, I rely on my (far-better-than-the-Nokia) Orange SPV C500 to wake me up. The only problem here is that the Nokia did one thing that the Windows Mobile phone doesn't do - and that is to turn itself ON and sound the alarm. Last thing at night I could set the alarm, then turn it off. It would turn itself on and sound the alarm magically every morning. This feature is missing from the Windows Mobile phone and I doubt we'll ever see it - however, I didn't mind too much. I got in the habit of leaving the phone on and putting it on charge at night time. The alarm goes off in the morning, everyone's happy.

    However...

Just recently I've had a problem. Somehow, despite me changing my number and never giving my number out to anyone I don't trust, I'm getting strange phone calls. At roughly 9pm every other night I get a call - usually 2 rings, then it hangs up. No number is left, and I'd rather not block unknown or private numbers because a lot of companies / contacts I have use them. This I can cope with - who cares, it's their money they're wasting, not mine. However, just recently it's been calling me at 3am, or 4am. This is a tad annoying, especially when I'm in the land of nod.

So how do I get out of this problem ? Do I turn off the phone and get something else to wake me up on time ? Nah... Too much clutter!

Shall I leave it on "Silent" and then the calls won't wake me up ? Nahh, I'll have to turn it back to "Normal" every morning. Too much hassle.

So here's the strange-but-good solution that I did..

    1) First plug your phone into the computer and get it sync'd up.

    2) Second, I open up Microsoft Outlook on my PC and add a new appointment. I call the appointment "Sleep" and set it for a daily reoccurance between 00.30 and 07.15 in the week only. I also set the time to be shown as "busy". OH! One important bit - TURN OFF THE REMINDER! If you don't turn this off it'll bleep at you just before you're due to go to sleep :)...

    3) This then automatically synchronises with my Windows Mobile phone, so on the phone I have an appointment called "sleep" so that I don't get disturbed during these times.....

    4) Now I got into Profiles. You can find this in Start->Settings->Profiles. I'm going to set it to "Automatic". This is a much-forgotten profile which turns the phone to "silent" mode (or whatever you want, you can edit the profile don't forget) whenever you're in a meeting... and I'm in a verrryy long meeting.... :)...

    5) At 7.15 the phone switches back to it's normal mode. Now all I need to do is check my alarm, which is set to go off at 7.30. I've allowed a 15-minute gap just in case I need to set it any earlier later on...

There we go! If anyone or anything (automated diallers) calls me between those hours it'll ring but won't make a sound. I can see who's called too if it is important.
