Ghostek Cloak 2 Protective Case Review

Every one of us at Coolsmartphone love our gadgets, but we all also have the same issues and problems with putting it in a case. My nice shiny new iPhone 7 has been crying out for a new case to make sure it doesn’t hurtle towards the floor at every available opportunity. I’ve been testing out a few options over the last few weeks, and here is my review of the Ghostek Cloak 2 Protective Case.

Design

When browsing through iPhone cases you’re often greeted by the same sort of designs over and over again. There are only so many clear plastic cases and coloured shields you can take, when I pulled the Ghostek Cloak 2 Protective Case out of its packaging I was instantly treated to something different. It promises:

  • Complete all round protection for your iPhone 7 Plus
  • Clear back and metallic frame compliment your phone perfectly
  • Screen protector included
  • Access to ports and features

The majority of the case is made from a high quality clear TPU allowing for your colour of iPhone to stand out. This wraps around every inch of the phone, meaning your pride and joy is protected from the rigours of daily use. This case also covers all of the buttons for added safety adding precision cut outs for the mute switch, camera(s), speaker holes and charging plug.

The Clear TPU is then combined with a contrasting Aluminium frame which wraps around the back and sides which gives the case loads of strength. The case tested is the clear/black version, bit it is also available in gold/clear, pink/clear and silver/clear. The engraved Ghosteck name and logo are a particular nice touch which gives a premium feel.

Usability

Covering the buttons is always a bit of a risk unless you get the design and most importantly the engineering right. Luckily Ghostek have got its design spot on here. All of the buttons retain just enough tactile feedback to still feel great, which is more that can be said for others on the market.

All the strength in the world doesn’t matter if the case is too big and bulky for daily use – unfortunately the Ghostek Cloak 2 Protective Case is a bit hit and miss. In terms of size the case fits very snuggly around the phone, meaning it doesn’t increase the size of the phone that much. However the case is on the heavy side – bumping the weight up to 230g from the iPhone 7 plus regular 188g.

This is in the middle of the two cases I have already tested, however this is only 2g less than the Speck Presidio Clear Case which offers protection for upto an 8ft drop! Undoubtably this Ghostek Cloak 2 Protective Case is very strong and durable, but does not offer that kind of protection.

With that said the phones curves and to a certain extent the design is also lost behind the metal frame. The square frame makes the phone appear more angled than it is, although I have had quite a few people comment on how nice the case looks which is great.

Ghostek Cloak 2 Verdict

The really nice contrast and added strength of the Aluminium frame are paid for in terms of weight. Which will definitely be noticeable to any user, if you’re quite happy with that then this case should be on your list! It does a great job of covering everything up and still making buttons and ports usable.

If you fancy something a bit different with loads of protection you can pick up this case from Mobile fun for the regular sized iPhone 7, and also the iPhone 7 plus as tested.
