MixRadio goes pop

The music streaming service has unceremoniously closed today, with very little detail about the reason behind the decision. A statement on their site simply reads..

We are very sorry to say that MixRadio has closed

We would like to thank everyone who has helped make the last 17 years of music so much fun.

Thank you for the music. Goodbye.

..and that’s literally it, so we had to do a bit of digging. The service is / was owned by Line Corporation and by Nokia and Microsoft before that. It was known, back in the day, as Nokia Music. Yeah. Remember that?

In recent times we’ve covered MixRadio and the associated mobile apps, which were only announced in the middle of last year.

After a bit of prompting Line gave us a statement saying that MixRadio is being shut down following a…

.. careful assessment of the subsidiary’s overall performance (and) the financial challenges posed by the music streaming market.

It looks like this is another market where only a small number of big players can exist and make money.
