Teen Developers – Colton Anglin

Teen Developers Colton Anglin

Colton’s Workspace

Today we talked with Colton Anglin, a young developer based out of Oklahoma City. He develops for open source and the Web, and loves all things Apple. Hackathons are pretty great too.

You say that you enjoy contributing to open source projects. Does developing open-source feel any different than when you’re developing for yourself or a client?

I really love contributing to Open Source projects. It feels a lot different than working for a client with strict guidelines. The whole iOS community is very accepting and always open to teach people new things.

Last year you founded a design firm, 77 Design. What has this been like for you?

It’s been a lot of fun. It wasn’t anything big but it was still awesome to work with a lot of my good friends.

If you could only choose one and could never go back to the other, would you rather design or develop?

I would definitely develop. I don’t know if this is just because I have zero design skill but I do genuinely love programming.

You recently developed an iOS app, YouthEast. Is working on a team project something new to you or have you done this before? Do you prefer working individually or in a team?

Team projects can be good and bad depending on the people. In most of my cases, I’ve had amazing people in my teams. I for sure like team projects more but personal projects are fun as well!

If you couldn’t design or develop anymore, what would you do with your time?

I can’t even begin to see myself not being a developer but I would most likely get back into video production. For a few years, I was obsessed with making movies, visual effects, and photography. It’s a fun hobby to have.

Anything else you’d like to add?

To anyone who wants to learn to code: there are fantastic organizations such as YRS, MLH (and also big companies like Intel) that put on events to teach people to code. I would highly recommend looking into these events. Also, join the developer community on Twitter!

As always, feel free to contact Kaleb if you’d like to be featured. Posts come out Thursday mornings every two weeks.
