So, you want a decent quality gel-type case for your iPhone 5, but you’d like to to have a stand function too. No problem, there are loads to choose from. You also want it to look like a dog?! I have just the thing sir… The Olo Creatures Dog iPhone 5 case.

OK, this isn’t one for the high flying businessman with his Armani suit and Aston Martin DB9, but don’t turn your nose up just yet.

Olo are a brand sold through Case Mate, a well respected name in phone case manufacture, so it comes as no surprise that this seemingly novelty item is actually a well thought out and manufactured case.

The soft rubbery material actually feels really nice, and holds the phone snuggly. The buttons and cut-outs are all well positioned, although the volume can occasionally be hard to operate.

The back of the case has the doggy design. One of its ‘eyes’ is actually the cut-out for the camera, which makes the little critter seem slightly bemused.

As I found in many aspects of life the tongue is a very useful tool, and it’s no different here. The long pink strip that masquerades as the dog’s tongue is actually the dual purpose stand. A lift with a fingernail will pull out the stand mechanism like a piece of strawberry bubblegum. It holds the iPhone at a good angle in portrait orientation, but it has another trick up its… err, collar.

By pinching the ‘tongue’ between ones fingers it pops into a half curled shape, so it looks quite like a panting dog’s tongue, and will now hold the phone securely in both portrait and landscape; a nice touch.

Oh, and it’s got a bone shaped charm that hangs off one of the bottom corners.

I have to say that this really isn’t my thing, and when Case Mate sent it to me I was a little dubious as to whether I wanted to review it at all. However, the clever design and good build quality has won me over. Despite this I would never clad my phone in a comedy dog case, but when my colleague’s fiance saw a photo of it she just had to have it from me. The fact that they own a dachshund named Peggy may well explain this!

Overall I’d say that this is a very good case which would make the the ideal Christmas stocking filler for the right person.

You can buy the Olo Snap Creatures Dog iPhone 5/5S case from Case Mate for £12.
