Galaxy Mega 6.3 up for pre order with delivery in July

“Are they big? I like them big… BIG!”

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is on its way, and you could be one of the first in the country to be lugging around this massive handset, because two major internet retailers have them up for pre-order. Expansys are asking £469.99 for a black one (including free delivery), but not giving a delivery date, whereas Clove have black or white and want £460 with a vague delivery date of July.

The Mega is certainly a lot of phone for your money when talking physical size, but by way of specs it’s not quite as impressive as its ‘little’ brother, the Galaxy S4. A 6.3 inch screen sounds incredible until you notice its 720p resolution (S4 is 1080p) and the 1.7GHz processor sounds whizzy enough, until the words dual-core come into focus (S4 is 1.9GHz quad-core).

Here’s a more comprehensive list of its mediocre specs:

  • 1.7GHz dual-core processor
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS
  • 1.5GB RAM
  • 16GB memory with microSD slot
  • 6.3 inch, 720p IPS display
  • 8 megapixel rear camera
  • 2 megapixel front camera
  • video/audio player
  • FM radio
  • up to 32 GB expandable memory
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, 3.5mm audio jack
  • 3200 mAh battery
  • Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor, Gyroscope, Magnetometer, Proximity sensor
  • Dimensions: 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm
  • Weight: 199 g

I use a Samsung Galaxy Note II on a daily basis and I still get comments about how stupidly big it is, so what I’d get if I turned up to work with this I’d hate to think. But aesthetics aside, the Note II is either on par or very near in every respect apart from the screen size. Even when it comes to battery capacity, the Mega’s is only 100mAh more than the Note II’s!

Samsung Galaxy Note II vs. Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3

Having said all that, I have to say it actually feels rather good in the hand and the screen looks a lot better than I expected. It does have most of the special software currently only available on the Galaxy S4, so if you’re impressed with all that and you want a phone with a 6.3 inch screen, then you have very little choice, so hop over to your retailer of favour and get your order in before they sell out!
