Nexus 4 FlexiShield Skin – Review

While I do love my Nexus 4, I did spend a fair amount of time in my review, and on the podcast, discussing its design flaws. Although the glass back might look and feel great, it certainly doesn’t help with durability or handling. It’s an accident waiting to happen, both more likely to break and easier to drop.

Hence my search for a case began fairly swiftly after getting my handset. The first one I’m trying is the FlexiShield Skin, which was very kindly sent to me by the great folks at Mobile Fun. It’s currently selling for £9.99, and unlike the official Nexus 4 bumper is actually available now with next day delivery.

The FlexiShield is a fairly simple gel skin for the Nexus 4, and is available in both smoke (grey) or clear. It’s designed to be as unobtrusive as possible and largely succeeds. It wraps around the Nexus 4nice and tightly and has various holes for the headphone port, micro USB port, both microphones, the camera and the speaker slit. It does add a slight bit of bulk to the phone but I didn’t find this to be an issue at all.

It does take away slightly from the Nexus 4’s great looks, but for me the practical benefits far outweigh the aesthetic issues and, in any case (pun not intented), it’s far from ugly. The sides of the skin are a clear plastic, while the back has a matte texture which I rather like the look and feel of.

While I didn’t feel the need to perform a drop test, I do feel confident that my Nexus 4 will now be far better off when it inevitably does meet a slab of concrete. The back and sides are fully protected, while there is a lip around the edges of the front face, which should hopefully be enough to protect the screen when dropped on a flat surface.

Listeners of the podcast will also be pleased to know that the FlexiShield also resolves my edge of bed issues. With the FlexiShield, my Nexus 4 hasn’t once slipped off a surface as it was wont to do before. I also no longer have to handle it so carefully when pulling it in and out of my pocket.

Overall I’m very happy with the FlexiShield. It’s a simple, inexpensive case which lokos good and offers decent protection for your shiny new Nexus 4. I’d definitely recommend it if you want to keep it that way.

Once again I’d like to thank Mobile Fun for letting me try out the FlexiShield. You can check out their range of Nexus 4 cases here.
