Archos GamePad. Will it be the ultimate gaming machine?

Archos have recently announced another new device, this time it is a 7″ tablet with game controls on either side of the screen.

For the first time with this sort of thing I am actually quite excited about it. In the past devices like this have shown their faces only to fail because of supply chain issues, quality issues or pricing issues. Either way they never made it to the mass market.

I feel Archos are one of a few brands that will actually get this to market at a decent price.

There are only a few specs mentioned so far:

  • 7-inch display
  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor
  • Mali 400mp quad-core GPU
  • Google-licensed device
  • automatic game recognition and mapping tools
  •  Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • less than 150 Euro
I repeat “automatic game recognition and mapping tools” now that one piece of info definitely caught my attention. Lots of gamepads and controllers work with Android, but if the game your trying to play isn’t coded to work with a controller you have a problem. Yes it is do-able to remap controls, but it isn’t easy. This GamePad from Archos should solve those problems out of the box. Archos said the following about this feature:

“Until now, tablets provided gamers with touch controls that lacked response and compatibility for their advanced games, providing a disappointing gaming experience. As one of the main tablet uses, there is a strong need for a tablet that does more for gaming. Thanks to the complete touch and physical controls of the ARCHOS GamePad, Gamers can enhance their experience.”

Archos GamePad. Will it be the ultimate gaming machine?

Hopefully we will see this device later on in the year, hopefully games developers will build native support into their games, hopefully it will appear in the UK and hopefully it won’t cost too much.
