The Chinese mobile manufacturer Foxconn is reported to be working with Amazon on the device.  There is no word yet of specs or which operating system the device will run however the likelihood is that it will be based on the same OS that runs on the Kindle Fire, Amazon’s heavily modified Android tablet.

Any phone launched by Amazon would be seen by the company as another portal into the lucrative digital sales market incorporating books, films and music.

Amazon will be entering a mobile handset market saw which sales of nearly 400 million units in Q1 2012 where the top selling were Apple’s iPhone and Samsungs various Android offerings.
